KASARAGOD: A major disaster was averted after a landslide occurred on the road in Starnagar, Bevinje where national highway construction is ongoing. The incident occurred around 12 noon on Monday. The landslide occurred moments after passengers who were stationed in this spot boarded a private bus passing through this area.

People in four houses near the premises are having sleepless nights following the threat of landslides and heavy rainfall.

The soil that fell on the road in Bevinje is being removed using an earthmover. Traffic is currently halted on this route. Only ambulances and emergency service vehicles are allowed to pass through in a controlled manner. The Disaster Management Authority announced that traffic will be restored only after the road is confirmed safe for travel. Incensed locals staged a protest on the road.

District Collector K. Imbashekar said that the soil cannot be removed from NH 66 until the rains stop. The district collector also promised to beseech the National Highway Authority to build a concrete wall in the area.
