The education sector in Kerala is undergoing major shifts and discussions. People prefer different courses, with many preferring education in different states and even other countries. Santhosh George Kulangara, a famous traveller and media worker, recently spoke about the education system in Kerala from his own experience.
"My daughter studied in our own school till class 10. My father was and still is the chairman of the firm. After class 10, she told my father, "Achacha, I doubt the marks I get as I study in our school. I doubt whether the teachers gifted me marks out of fear of Achachan. So now I will go to some other school to study. I will get to how many marks I will get." To this, my father agreed," Santhosh said.
"So she joined and studied at the International School in Kodaikanal. Its syllabus is International Baccalaureate (IB). After studying well there, she came back and got admission in Assumption College in Changanassery. A year later, my daughter received a letter from Mahatma Gandhi University."
"The letter reads that they do not accept the course. A student who had studied IB syllabus was expelled from Mahatma Gandhi University. My daughter lost one year. In the presence of the former vice-chancellor, I am saying that Mahatma Gandhi University is made up of idiots who do not know what IB is. Aren't they the ones who are going to reform our education? She later got admission in Bengaluru as she had good marks," Santhosh George said.
Santhosh George Kulangara said that students should see education as a ladder to reach their goals. "But many people are carrying ladders without knowing what the goal is, and that way should change," he added.
