Toilet waste released onto beach; tourists and locals cover their noses

beach

KOVALAM: The discharge of wastewater including toilet waste into the beach caused distress to local residents and tourists. The waste was released through the drainage below the Kovalam lighthouse where the beach starts. The garbage washed up on the shore and the stench spread throughout the area.

Toilet waste was dumped on the beach under the cover of the rain on Sunday night, and the allegation is that this could have come from any of the hotels on the upper part of the beach. On being informed, the Coastal sanitation agency sprinkled bleaching powder on the beach but the stench did not subside. The agency officials said that the garbage will be removed and the coast will be cleaned. There is a strong demand that those in charge should find those who have released the waste and take strong action.
