THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fertilizer produced from organic waste at the Brahmapuram waste plant will cross the sea. A private company called Fabco, led by Latheef and Nias, natives of Changaramkulam in Malappuram district, will supply the fertilizer on an industrial basis. The first container containing 120 tons of organic fertilizer will be sent to Dubai next week. Fabco has set up a plant with a capacity to process 25 tons of waste per day in Brahmapuram. Along with processing organic waste properly, the project will also earn foreign exchange for the state.

Super star soldier worms

The opportunity to export organic fertilizer produced at the Brahmapuram plant arose when Dubai-based company Refam approached Fabco. Understanding the quality of the fertilizer processed using soldier worms (Black Soldier Fly Lava), Refam reached an agreement with Fabco. Using soldier worms, waste can be composted in eight days. Compost that also contains the remains of the worms is of higher quality.

How it works

  • 70 percent of the waste will be eaten by Soldier worms
  • 30 percent will be composted
  • By the time the waste is composted, the Soldier worms will grow into black soldier flies
  • These can be used to make feed for fish and livestock

Toilet waste treatment

Fabco also has a plan to set up plants to treat toilet waste using armyworms. The plan will be presented to the state government soon.
