KOCHI: The woman, who threw her three-year-old daughter into the river, will be arrested soon. The girl’s mother Sandhya (35) in her statement to the police has confessed to the crime. The dead is Kalyani, daughter of Subhash of Varikoli Mattakuzhy Keezhpilly House in Kolenchery. Sandhya was suffering from some mental illness, said her relatives. She is presently under the custody of Chengamanad police.
The body of Kalyani was found by divers from Chalakudy river. Her body was recovered from the river after a long search of eight and a half hours. The search was conducted in the river and nearby places following her mother’s statement that she abandoned the child near the Moozhikkulam Bridge. A scuba diving team also arrived for the search.
Sandhya’s relatives revealed that there were some family issues. Sandhya and her husband were estranged. The child was brought to her father's house due to family issues.
Sandhya went to the Anganawadi in Mattakuzhy yesterday and picked her child from there and was returning to her own home in Kurumaseri. CCTV footage of the two getting off the bus at Moozhikulam was obtained. The Chalakudy river is hundred meters away from the stop. The woman had reached this bridge with the child. She later went to her house in Kurumaseri alone. The auto driver also confirmed this. Sandhya’s first statement was that the child was with her till Aluva and was not seen after that. She later changed her statement. Her statements were contradictory. When she was taken into custody and grilled, Sandhya said that she abandoned the child near the bridge. Her body has been shifted to Aluva Taluk Hospital.
