Forest Dept devises strategies; Arikomban continues to destroy houses

kk

IDUKKI: Rogue tusker 'Arikomban' continues to cause destruction even as the district administration and the forest department devise strategies to capture the tusker that wreaks havoc in populated areas. On Tuesday morning, Arikomban destroyed two houses in Periyakanal. The houses of Vijayan, a native of Bison Valley, and Ashraf, a native of Adimali, were damaged. There were no casualties as people in these houses remained in safe places.

Two female elephants and one baby elephant have arrived in a group along with Arikomban. Hence, it will not be easy for the forest department to drive away Arikomban alone from the hilly area to the 301 colony. Meanwhile, a review meeting was held in Munnar under the leadership of District Collector Sheeba George.

The Collector said that prohibitory order will be announced in selected wards of Chinnakanal and Shanthanpara Panchayats on the 25th. The mission will start at 4 am on the 25th. The elephant will be given a tranquillizer shot after it is driven to the 301 colony or the cement bridge. The officials will try to complete the task before noon as it will be difficult to capture the elephant in the afternoon. A mock drill will be organized for the officers on March 24th. Under no circumstances will viewers or video vloggers be allowed into this area.
