NEW DELHI: Boxer Mary Kom has sought help from the central government after the clashes escalated in Manipur. “My state Manipur is burning. Kindly help”, tweeted Mary Kom with pictures of the violence.
Mary Kom tweeted by tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. It is reported that Amit Shah spoke to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and assessed the situation in the state.
Curfew has been announced in places like Imphal and Kangpokpi where clashes continue. Army has been deployed in the problem areas and internet service has been suspended in conflict areas.
The minority tribal groups started protesting against the High Court's proposal to declare the majority community Meiti as a Scheduled Tribe. Thousands of people participated in the tribal solidarity march called by the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSM) yesterday. Meanwhile, violence broke out between the two groups. There are reports that the protesters set fire to several houses and the offices of the forest department.
