NEW DELHI: Next year's republic day parade will be a stunner watch. The army will be represented by women, same with the tableaus lining up the parade. The move is part of the central government's initiative to push for more representation of women in all domains of work. The defense ministry has meanwhile issued a Memo to various departments to bolster plans for the epic parade. All departments are said to report to the ministry regarding the progress in the work of women's participation in the parade. No such country has ever pulled off a parade with complete participation of women. It will be a rare watch.
Meanwhile, doubts still circle over the governments plan for January 26. Women numbers are improving but not a sizable one in Indian Army. March pasts are mostly a domain of men in uniforms and it will take a yeoman's work to make the numbers fit before the republic day set for next year.
In 2015, for the first time, an all-women contingent from each of the three services marched in the parade. In 2019, Captain Shikha Surabhi became the first woman officer to perform a bike stunt as part of the Army's Daredevils team
