Cyclone Mocha reaches shore, wind speed to hit 210 km per hour, many evacuated

NEW DELHI: Cyclone Mocha has made landfall in the Bay of Bengal. As a result, Bangladesh and Myanmar experience heavy rains. The authorities have warned that the cyclone will reach a speed of 210 km per hour.

There are reports that St Martin's Island in Bangladesh will be under water. Thousands of people have been evacuated in Myanmar and Bangladesh. Authorities said that around five lakh people will have to be evacuated in Bangladesh alone. More than 4,000 security camps have been set up.

Disaster Response Force personnel have been deployed in the coastal areas of Purba Medinipur and South 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal. Eight teams of disaster management teams have reached Digha in West Bengal.

A high alert has also been issued in Cox's Bazar district, where the Rohingya refugee camp is located. A special team of the World Health Organization has been deployed here.

Meantime, the Central Meteorological Department has informed that there is a possibility of isolated heavy rains in Kerala for the next five days. A yellow alert was issued in Pathanamthitta and Idukki on Wednesday. Authorities have warned that there is a possibility of rain with thunder and lightning at one or two places in Kerala and strong winds with a speed of 30 to 40 kmph.
