THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice Antony Dominic said that the use of bikes with high engine capacity, which are not suitable for Kerala, should be regulated in the state. The Transport Commissioner informed the Commission that action will be taken in this regard. The action came in the case where a pedestrian and a biker were killed after a speeding bike hit the pedestrian on the Thiruvallam Bypass on January 30. It was alleged that bike racing was the cause of the accident.
A Kawasaki Ninja bike with a 1000 cc engine capacity was involved in the accident. The police found that overspeeding was the cause of the accident. The Transport Commissioner informed the Commission that roads in Kerala are not suitable for such bikes. The Thiruvallam Police Inspector informed the Commission that the National Highways Authority had not lit the street lights despite several complaints that the plants growing on the medians were obscuring the view from the other side. The inspector also said that there were no warning signs, zebra crossing or speed breakers on the road.
The Commission asked for the installation of speed breakers, warning boards, speed humps and fencing on the medians to prevent overspeeding on the roads in the state.
