IMPHAL: The internet ban has been extended in Manipur in the wake of a fresh incidents of violence. The ban is till June 15. The state banned the internet after riots broke out on May 3, and the authorities have explained that the move is to prevent fake news.
At the same time, after two days of calm, Manipur became tense again. Three people were shot dead by armed assailants in Khoken village between Kangpokpi and Imphal West districts yesterday. A woman is among the dead. According to the police, the terrorists arrived in a vehicle that looks similar to that of the army. They reached the village yesterday morning and started firing at the villagers with automatic guns. Two people were seriously injured in the attack.
More than a month after the riots broke out in Manipur, there were reports that 82 percent of the weapons looted from police headquarters had not been returned.
The dispute over the Scheduled Caste status of the Meiti sect resulted in riots in Manipur. The conflict in Manipur is between tribal and non-tribal groups.
