Central Meteorological Department warns of isolated rain in three districts of Kerala

rain

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central Meteorological Department has informed that there is a possibility of light rain at isolated places in Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram of Kerala. Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is possible in Kollam, Palakkad and Kannur. Winds may gust up to 40 km/h.

Meantime, people who sought refuge in the camps from neck-deep water during the overnight torrential rains in Thiruvananthapuram returned home yesterday after the rain stopped. They worked hard the whole day to clean the house which was covered with mud and dirt. As all the food items in the house were destroyed, the food provided by the volunteers was a great relief to them.

It will take days of hard work to clean up the house and courtyard from the overflowing sewage. A total of 915 people has been shifted to 15 relief camps from flooded houses in the city. Six houses were completely destroyed and 11 houses partially destroyed in the district. Many of these camps were closed after the rain stopped. Camps continue in waterlogged areas. Water has receded in Pattom, Ulloor, Muttathara, Kazhakoottam, Kannammoola, Gowreeshapattam, Pattoor, Karamana and Muttathara Asan Nagar. Water has receded in Thettiyar, Kariyilathod and Amayizhanchan. However, the flow has not reduced in Killiyar and Karamana River.

The view in the capital city was similar to the districts inundated by the 2018 floods. Many people have suffered damage worth lakhs including electronic devices, household appliances and furniture. There are people who have lost clothes and documents. People whose houses have not been cleaned are still in camps. Many have no clothes to change because the cupboards where clothes are stored have been submerged in water. There was also a situation where vehicles could not start because of the water.
