Massive gold bust at Thiruvananthapuram airport, about six kilos of gold seized; 14 people, including Tamil Nadu native arrested

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: 14 people were arrested at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport after about 6 kg of gold was seized during the inspection conducted by DRI and Customs at the airport. Thirteen of the arrested persons are from Sri Lanka, while one is from Tamil Nadu. Ten of them are women. The smuggled gold was kept hidden in bags and shoes.

The other day, three youths were arrested at Thiruvananthapuram airport for trying to smuggle more than two kilos of gold from abroad. The arrested people were Bhimappally native Syedali, Tiruchirappalli native Riyas Ahmed and Mavelikkara native Shinas. Gold worth one crore and twenty lakh rupees were seized from them.

Riyas tried to smuggle 962 22 grams of gold by swallowing it into balls. Syedali tried to smuggle 170.18 grams of gold by hiding it in a roll of measuring tape. Shinaz, who came from Sharjah on the Air India Express flight, was caught with 870.4 3 grams of gold during the inspection. He tried to smuggle the gold by swallowing it in the form of three capsules. The gold was retrieved from Riyas and Shinas with medical help.
