Nipah virus detected in Wayanad bats; No genetic changes, confirms Health Minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister, Veena George has announced the presence of the Nipah virus in bats in Wayanad. The virus has been confirmed to be present in the Bathery and Mananthavadi areas. This information was relayed by the ICMR.

It's the same virus that was found in previous years and there have been no genetic mutations. The Minister emphasized that there is currently no cause for concern. Veena George further stated that health workers will receive the necessary training to take precautions against Nipah while caring for individuals with severe lung diseases.

The double incubation period of Nipah is ending tomorrow. The Nipah virus was first reported in Kozhikode district on September 12 last year. The district which successfully dealt with Nipah twice before has effectively managed the situation this time as well. Various departments under the leadership of the health department and with the assistance of the district administration have coordinated efforts for Nipah prevention activities.
