KOTTAKKAL: In some dramatic scenes, with the CPM support, a league rebel was elected as president in Kottakkal municipality. In the election held on Wednesday morning, the official League candidate secured 13 votes while League dissident Muhsina won 15 votes, which included nine votes from LDF and six from League dissidents.
Acting Chairperson Dr. K. Hanisha was defeated. In the vice-chairman election held in the afternoon, League rebel and former vice-chairman P.P. Ummer defeated official League candidate Cherada Muhammadali (15-13).
The intense sectarianism in the Kottakkal League resulted in the resignation of Municipal President Bushra Shabir and Vice President P P Ummer. Muslim League leadership demanded their resignation which the two abided to. Wednesday’s elections were held for this vacancy.
28 members participated in the poll. Two members of the BJP abstained. Earlier on Wednesday, CPM, DYFI workers and Muslim League workers had a verbal argument and shoved each other after CPM workers were not allowed to enter the municipal ground.
