THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Police sniffer dog Kalyani’s death under mysterious circumstances is making headlines in Kerala. The mystery came to light when the doctor who conducted the post-mortem revealed that the dog had died of poison. The canine ‘Kalyani’ was an excellent sleuth who solved crucial cases while in the department.
The internal organs of the dog have been sent for chemical analysis to get more clarification on the matter. Poonthura police have started an investigation into the incident. At the same time, action was taken against three police officers for the sudden death of Kalyani.
Departmental action has been taken against Poonthura Dog Squad SI Unnithan and the two policemen who trained the dog. The order of the City Police Commissioner has been issued in this regard.
Kalyani, who was bestowed the rank of inspector by the department, died on November 20. She was eight years old. Kalyani joined the force in 2015 and had many admirers for her sheer brilliance in solving critical cases that confounded the department.
Kalyani, who belongs to the Sniper / Explosive category, was the first among 19 dogs to complete the training that year. Kalyani has participated in four duty meets of the Kerala Police and performed well and has participated in mock drills of many government institutions winning many honours.
Kalyani has also received the excellence award from the state police chief for the year 2021. Kalyani also had the rare achievement of 10 good service entries. The sniffer died while undergoing surgery to remove a tumour in the stomach.
