'New governing body in control of former incumbents'; Govt suspends wrestling federation

NEW DELHI: The Sports Ministry has taken decisive action by suspending the newly elected governing body of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). This decision follows heightened protests by athletes against the appointment of a close associate of BJP MP Brij Bhushan Saran, who has been accused of molesting seven athletes, including a minor as the WFI president. The Ministry's intervention stems from its belief that the newly elected committee remains under the significant influence of the previous office-bearers.

Accusing the new governing body, led by Sanjay Singh, a loyal follower of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of disregarding legal and procedural norms, the Ministry cited a 'blatant disregard for established protocols' in their statement. The election of the new governing body, headed by Sanjay Singh took place last Thursday.

Furthermore, the Ministry highlighted that the Federation's operations are still conducted at premises controlled by former officials where the alleged sexual assaults against athletes occurred. Ongoing court proceedings substantiate the severity of these allegations. The Ministry expressed dissatisfaction with Sanjay Singh's decision to host the U-15 and U-20 national championships in Brij Bhushan's hometown of Gonda citing inadequate notice given to participating wrestlers and a failure to adhere to WFI's constitutional provisions.

In their statement, the Ministry emphasized that the actions of the new WFI president contradicted fundamental principles of good governance. They highlighted a lack of transparency due process and the apparent tyranny in decision-making. Upholding governance norms, the Ministry emphasized is crucial for fostering trust between athletes and the public.
