Japan hit by 155 earthquakes in Japan in one day, 24 dead, rescue operations underway

TOKYO: Twenty-four people lost their lives in a powerful earthquake that struck Japan on Monday. Rescue operations are in full swing to save those trapped in the destroyed buildings.


An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale was felt in the coastal province of Ishikawa on the island of Honshu in central Japan. Reports said a 1.2-meter-high waves lashed Ishikawa. The epicenter of the earthquake was the Noto area of Ishikawa. 155 earthquakes occurred in the country in just one day. The Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, responded that there are huge damages.


The first earthquake was felt at 4.06 local time. Four minutes later, the next earthquake was even stronger. The first earthquake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale. The second registered 7.6 on the Richter scale. Eight minutes later, another 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck. Aftershocks were felt at different times later.

A tsunami warning has also been issued. There was a significant change in the water level in the rivers. At the time of the earthquake, videos of water rushing in the river like a wave had already gone viral. Following the tsunami warning, people began to evacuate the area. A tsunami warning has been issued for the coastal areas of Japan such as Naigata, Toyama and Ishikawa. The Japanese Meteorological Agency has warned that the sea level may rise up to five meters following the tsunami and that people should be cautious. People are advised to move to higher areas.

Tsunami warnings have been issued in North and South Korea. Many houses and buildings were destroyed in the earthquake. Rail service in Ishikawa was completely disrupted. Many flights were cancelled. Power connection in 33,500 houses was also disconnected. The report said that there is no threat to nuclear power plants.
Japan is one of the most earthquake prone areas in the world. In 2011, Japan experienced its worst earthquake ever. On that day, the Fukushima nuclear power plant went wrong.
