New books get approval; comprehensive curriculum reform introduced in state after 10 years

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Education Minister V Sivankutty said that the Curriculum Committee has given approval for the new books in connection with comprehensive curriculum reform in the schools of the state. The Curriculum Steering Committee has given approval to 173 title textbooks. Textbooks for classes 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 have been approved. Before this, a comprehensive reform was introduced in the curriculum in 2007. Some changes had taken place in 2013 as well. No changes had taken place in the curriculum for the last 10 years.

More than 900 teachers worked on curriculum reform. The minister said that this was a one-and-a-half-year-long process. All the books in the new curriculum will have the Malayalam alphabet. Speaking at a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, the minister stated that the officials had also sought opinions from the children and at the panchayat level. The minister said that the curriculum was revised in a very popular and transparent manner taking a long time.
