ISLAMABAD: An Islamabad court has sentenced former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife to 14 years in prison in the Toshakhana case. The couple has also been barred from contesting elections for ten years. Yesterday, Imran Khan along with former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in the case of leaking state secrets.
In the Toshakhana corruption case, Imran Khan was accused of misusing his 2018 to 2022 premiership to buy and sell gifts in state possession that were received during visits abroad and worth more than Rs 140 million. The court had earlier found Imran guilty in this case. Imran is currently in custody but his wife has not been arrested yet.
Imran's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) has claimed that this is a fake case and said they will approach the higher court against the verdict. Imran, who is currently in Adiala Jail, has been barred from contesting general elections for five years. Although this sentence was suspended by the Islamabad High Court, he was not released from jail due to other cases.
General elections in Pakistan will be held on February 8. Imran is the president of PTI. The party alleges that the opponents are trying to prevent Imran from contesting the elections and has decided to protest against this.
