Court acquits mother accused of killing her five-year-old daughter

court

KOZHIKODE: A woman accused of killing her five-year-old daughter has been acquitted by the POCSO court here. The judgment pointed out that the prosecution failed to prove that Sameera, the accused, had committed the crime.

Ayisha Rana, the daughter of Nawaz and Sameera, of Chamundivalappu in Payyanakkal Beach died on July 7, 2021. The initial assumption of the police was that the mother killed the child due to mental disturbance. The police registered a case of unnatural death and conducted an investigation. The post-mortem report said that the child was killed by suffocation with a thin towel or cloth.

On the day of Ayisha's death, Sameera showed discomfort and was shifted to the Medical College Hospital. She was then shifted to the mental health centre in Kuthiravattom for treatment. The treatment given there revealed that Sameera had no mental problems. The doctor who treated Sameera said that superstition might be the reason behind the murder. However, the murder could not be proved in court.
