KANNUR: The locals attacked a Theyyam artist at Thillenkeri in Kannur. The incident happened last evening. The clash broke out after a child sustained injuries while running after getting scared seeing the Kaithachamundi Theyyakkolam.

The incident happened during the Peringanam Udayamkunnu Madapura festival. The function of theyyam coming to Madapura after cutting the kaitha plant was going on. Meanwhile, the practice is to follow and frighten people in a fierce manner. This later led to a clash. A boy got scared after seeing Theyyakkolam while running and sustained injuries. Later some of the locals jointly attacked the theyyam artist.

The police and those in the festival committee calmed the incident. No one has lodged a complaint and so a case has not been registered. The police directed to complete the function without any untoward incidents and warned that action would be taken otherwise. Kaithachamundi Theyyam is a very popular ritual in North Malabar.
