THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Dust devils are uncommon in Kerala considering the plain landscape of the state. However, Friday produced a rather rare sight for many in Poojappura ground where a cricket tournament was intruded by a rare dust devil.

The incident happened on Friday afternoon, when the dust devil suddenly formed in the ground taking in awe the people gathered. The play was stopped for a brief time, while others were asked to stay away from the ground. Bottles and other particles were also caught in the vortex, while no damage was inflicted. The viral video is accompanied by a hilarious commentary in Malayalam.

Dust devils are vertically oriented rotating columns of wind that are usually harmless, but have caused destruction to both people and property in the past. Dust devils form when a pocket of hot air near the surface rises quickly through cooler air above it, forming an updraft. The hot air in the ground makes the dust form a cylindrical shape and will move upwards. The spinning effect is caused when more hot air joins the vortex.

The hot air on reaching a higher altitude mixes with the cooler temperature and then ceases completely, which will give away the shape ergo killing the dust devil.

Normally it is rare for dust devil to occur in Kerala. Today's incident again gave a reality into the sweltering heat that Kerala is experiencing. Dust devils are common in deserts and other arid regions.
