Man seeks police help to curb daughter's excessive phone use; counselling reveals disturbing truth

MUMBAI: Just days before, a man approached the police with a strange complaint. He confessed to being frustrated at his daughter’s addiction towards social media platforms including Instagram.

The police after considering his complaint promised to allow counselling to the girl. The female police officer talked with the girl about the dangers of social media and continuous internet use. The police officer also told the girl to open up about anything haunting her.

It was at this juncture that the girl opened up about the trauma she has been facing for the past few years. According to the complaint, the girl said she was being subjected to repeated sexual torture by her father for many years. Based on the complaint, police then took the father of the girl into custody under POCSO charges. The police informed me that the girl had been sent for medical examination and her statement had been recorded.

The girl who was staying with her parents has made it a habit to always engage in social media. Concerned about the overly us of social media, the mother of the girl beseeched her to reduce the usage but saw no results. It was at this point that the parents decided to approach the police seeking respite.
