67 killers sentenced to life imprisonment go into hiding after being released on parole in Kerala

ALAPPUZHA: A shocking report of the prison department has come out that 67 convicts who were sentenced to life imprisonment and released on parole have gone into hiding. All of them are murder accused. In other cases, the three who were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment have not returned.

This is the figure from 1990 to 2022. The issue is getting serious after a young woman was killed in Kozhikode the other day and the accused was revealed to be a convict in a different rape case.

Out of the 42 accused who escaped while on remand in three years, 17 are yet to be found. They are being tried in cases like murder, robbery, rape and violence against women. These remand accused escape by deceiving the policemen during their journeys to the court and hospitals.

If we look at the count since 1990, it has been 34 years since the first killer went into hiding. The convict Raman aka Subrahmanyam went on parole from the Nettukaltheri open jail. The case was registered by Pollachi police. He went out on parole on August 4, 1990 and was supposed to return on September 6.

The last person who managed to flee was Anil Kumar, who got life imprisonment in a murder case registered by the Eravipuram police. He, known as Anthakannan, went on parole on August 29, 2022 and was supposed to return on September 21.

Parole after two years

An inmate is eligible for parole as emergency leave and ordinary leave. In case of illness or death of a family member, emergency leave will be granted on the basis of medical certificate and police report.

Parole is for those who complete a two-year sentence. A person can get 60 days' parole in a year. Parole cannot be granted for less than 15 days and more than 30 days at a time. This can be allowed twice to four times a year. Parole is on personal surety and two sureties equal to Rs 10,000. If the person does not return, the sureties will have to pay a bond of Rs 5000 each.
