KOLKATA: Heavy rains and cyclonic storms have caused severe damage in northeastern states. Cyclones and heavy rains have claimed the lives of four individuals in Bengal. The incident occurred in the Jalpaiguri district, where at least 100 people have been reported injured. Many houses have been destroyed, and trees uprooted. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has informed that heavy rain and cyclones hit the area this afternoon, resulting in extensive damage in the Jalpaiguri-Mainaguri areas.
Power supply in the region has been disrupted, and disaster management operations are underway, including the evacuation of people to safer places. Compensation will be provided to the relatives of the deceased and necessary assistance will be given to the injured. Mamata arrived in Jalpaiguri at night to assess the situation. Meanwhile, Assam and Manipur are experiencing continued heavy rainfall. In Assam, the Guwahati airport has also been damaged by the rain and wind, leading to the suspension of air travel in northeastern states and adjoining areas where the adverse weather conditions persist.
