Income tax of Congress will not be levied soon

congress-

NEW DELHI: Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court that no action will be taken to collect the Rs 3,567 crore demanded from Congress as income tax, till the Lok Sabha elections are over.

Justice BV Nagarathna's bench, which recorded the Income Tax department's stand, adjourned the petition to July 24. The petition filed by Congress in 2016 questioning the tax was considered. Lawyer Manu Abhishek Singhvi brought to their notice the total amount imposed including the notice received.

A total of Rs 3567 crore has been demanded as tax for the financial year 1994-95 and for the seven years from 2014-15 to 2020-21. Congress has informed that about 135 crores of income tax has been collected so far by confiscating properties etc.

A bench headed by Justice BV Nagarathna is considering the case.
