THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Center for Oceanographic Research (INCOIS) has informed that the swell waves phenomenon experienced in the coastal areas of Kerala for the last two days will continue today also. Kerala coast and Lakshadweep experienced high waves for the first time on the morning of March 31, 2024. INCOIS has informed that for the next two days, this trend is likely to be seen over the west coast of India and weaken gradually. The National Center for Oceanographic Studies (INCOIS) has stated that the swell surge alert is likely to continue on the eastern coasts of India (Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal) and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands till April 2, 2024.

A depression formed in the South Atlantic Ocean on March 23, 2024, 10,000 km off the Indian coast, and by March 25, the depression had moved southward into the Indian Ocean. This resulted in very high waves (11 m) in the South Indian Ocean, which then reached the Indian coast. The Kerala Coast and South Tamil Nadu Coast are still on alert today.

Kallakadal/swell surge is the formation of high waves due to the result of strong winds in the southern part of the Indian Ocean at certain times. They will travel northwards and reach the southern coasts of India. These waves usually occur suddenly without any particular signs. They are called ‘kallakadal’ because the waves come suddenly without showing any symptoms. These waves can cause sea intrusion and upwelling in coastal areas.
