This facility in Ernakulam-Patna express would have saved TTE Vinod's life

THRISSUR: If the Ernakulam-Patna Express had automatic doors, TTE Vinod would not have faced this tragedy. Vande Bharat trains already have automatic doors, thereby potentially avoiding accidents and violence. However, even in new trains, there seems to be a lack of effort in installing automatic doors, despite incidents of doors opening and falling while the train is in motion.

Moreover, Vande Bharat trains are equipped with a system to relay information from passengers to the loco pilot in case of emergencies, providing a means for reporting accidents or crimes. Unfortunately, such a system is absent in new trains. Although new MEMU trains have cameras, older trains lack such surveillance measures. Had there been cameras, the crime scene would have provided crucial evidence, as demonstrated by the confession of the accused and eyewitness accounts in this case.

While railway stations are undergoing international development, trains continue to operate with outdated compartments. The central plan to install CCTV cameras in trains has not been effectively implemented. The proposal aimed to install eight cameras in each coach, covering doors and corridors. Despite technological advancements, train travel comfort has seen limited improvements, with modern facilities confined to new trains. Sanitation remains a concern, particularly in trains originating from northern states.

Security concerns have been highlighted following past incidents, such as the violence against a young woman in Mulanthuruthi and the Soumya incident. However, little action has been taken to address these issues. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) primarily focuses on nighttime security, leaving platforms vulnerable. There is criticism regarding the lack of preparations by railway police and RPF to apprehend criminals on platforms, with more attention given to seizing contraband like ganja.

The installation of cameras and automatic doors in old compartments is deemed impractical and cost-prohibitive, given the increasing number of passengers. Furthermore, the lack of significant recruitment in railway staff has led to a reduction in security personnel. This, coupled with general coach cutbacks to increase profitability, has resulted in overcrowding in other classes. Implementing automatic doors in new trains could potentially prevent many accidents and crimes, as advocated by P. Krishnakumar, General Secretary of the Thrissur Railway Passengers' Association.
