Kerala reeling under 'El Nino', temperatures to go up till Thursday; isolated showers in evening

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After eight years, Kerala is experiencing scorching heat due to the 'El Nino' phenomenon. The Indian Meteorological Department has warned that the temperature will increase till Thursday. Isolated showers from today evening will bring little relief.

During the El Nino phenomenon of 2016, the temperature went up to 41.9 degrees Celsius. Similarly, the temperature in Palakkad crossed 41 degrees. It may reach up to 40 in Kollam.

In Thrissur it can be up to 39. 38 degrees is expected in Kannur, Kozhikode, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam districts. The temperatures will reach 37 degrees Celsius in Ernakulam and Alappuzha. Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram and Kasaragod districts is likely to experience temperatures up to 36 degrees.

Heat wave in Palakkad

1.Palakkad is experiencing a situation similar to heat wave. If this situation occurs in another district, the state will officially declare a heat wave. The norm for this is 40 degrees Celsius in the plains. The temperature in Palakkad has been above 40 degrees for three days.

The first heat wave was experienced in 2016.

2. El Nino is an increase in sea surface temperature, which warms the atmosphere. El Nino in the Arabian Sea has affected Kerala. The course and direction of heat, wind and rain will be within its circle.

41.5 degrees on Saturday

Palakkad recorded this year's record heat of 41.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday. In 2016, the highest temperature was recorded at 41.9.

Record power consumption

  • Electricity consumption in the state is again at an all-time record

Avoid charging electric in the night

KSEB said charging of electric vehicles at night causes overloading of transformers and fuses to blow and an entire area goes dark. Therefore, electric vehicles should be charged after 12 midnight or during the day. All non-essential electrical appliances should be switched off between 6 pm to 12 pm.
