BARCELONA: After failing to win a single title this season, FC Barcelona sacked club legend Xavi Hernandez as coach. Xavi's sacking was confirmed by club president Joan Laporta. The change in decision came after it was announced last week that Xavi would continue to coach the team next season.
Xavi will step down after Barcelona's final game against Sevilla on Sunday. "Barcelona would like to thank Xavi for his work as a coach. Xavi has had an unparalleled career as a player and coach of the team," the club said in a statement.
The decision was made at Barcelona's training academy, Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper. Sports vice president Rafa Yuste, director of football Mateu Alemany and Xavi's assistants Oscar Hernandez and Sergio Alegre were present at the meeting.
Xavi took over as the coach of Barça in 2021. In the 2022-23 season under Xavi, the club won the La Liga and Spanish Super Cup titles. Barça played 142 matches in three seasons under Xavi.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that former Bayern Munich coach and former German national team coach Hansi Flick may be appointed as Xavi's replacement.
