KUALA LUMPUR: Indian badminton ace PV Sindhu stumbled on the final stage against world no. 7 Wang Zhi Yi of China in the Malaysian Masters badminton tournament. In the tense battle that lasted 79 minutes, Sindhu emerged victorious in the first set but saw her standards dip in both other sets to miss a gold (16-21,21-5,21-16). It was on last day that Sindhu defeated Thai player Busan Ongbamrungphan (13-21, 21-16, 21-12) in a three-set battle that lasted 88 minutes.

This was Sindhu’s first final for over a year after she finished runner-up at the Madrid Spain Masters in 2023. The double Olympic medalist was confident of carving her name in gold medal and showed glimpses of prowess in the earlier set of the game. However, her Chinese counterpart had the perseverance to later do a rout and snatch away the gold from the Indian, that too in a canter.

PV Sindhu is currently ranked 14 in the world.
