'My lyrics have been used in the film, no one took consent'; Vairamuthu criticizes Ilayaraja

Poet and lyricist Vairamuthu indirectly criticized musician Ilayaraja's copyright complaints against certain songs. Vairamuthu mentioned that some lines of his poems are used for movie titles, but he does not claim copyright over them.

"'Vinnaithandi Varuvaya' and 'Nee Thane En Ponvasantham' are the names of poems I have written. They have since been used for films. No one sought my consent when these lyrics I had written were used as movie titles. I never asked anyone about it. Vairamuthu is one of us, and others are using my poetry as Tamil language as our language," Vairamuthu clarified, indirectly criticizing Ilayaraja.

Earlier, Vairamuthu responded to the same issue, stating that a song is not only the melody but also the lyrics. Then Ilayaraja's brother and musician Gangai Amaran threatened Vairamuthu, warning him of severe action if he spoke ill of Ilayaraja.

Recently, Ilayaraja filed a copyright infringement complaint against the Malayalam blockbuster Manjumal Boys. Ilayaraja's lawyer sent a notice to the producers, stating that the song 'Kanmani Anpot' was included in the film without seeking permission.

Ilayaraja stated in the notice that permission was not sought for the inclusion of the 'Kanmani Anpod' song in the film. The notice asserts that merely mentioning it in the title card does not suffice. Ilayaraja has demanded compensation within 15 days. The notice primarily points out that copyright infringement has occurred. It makes clear that either permission should be sought or the song should be removed. The lawyer stated in the notice that compensation should be paid within 15 days, failing which legal action will be taken.
