DUBAI: People including expatriates in the Gulf countries are trying to live as cheaply as possible. Many try to bring various changes in their daily life. Such a new trend is now seen in the Gulf countries. Recently, the number of people who rely on bicycles to reach their workplaces has increased, avoiding other vehicles and facilities. Expats said there is more than one reason for the new style.
Cycling is seen as a means of exercise as well as reducing travel costs. Meantime, some are of the opinion that if they reach workplaces by bicycle every day, they can save time by avoiding air pollution and traffic jams. Mohsin Hasam Palija, a Dubai expatriate and yacht captain, told media that by following the new trend, he can save up to 700 dirhams (about Rs 16,000) monthly.
Palija said that he has been going to work by bicycle for the past one year. 'I live eight kilometers away from my work place. Until a year ago, used to go by taxi. Used to spend 700 dirhams for travelling. However, after renting a bicycle from a bike sharing app, was able to reduce the cost of a year's travel to 420 dirhams. It is better to rent a bicycle, said Palija.
