Food safety inspections on shawarma outlets, fish markets; 107 outlets shut down in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister Veena George said that the food safety inspections have been strengthened in the state during monsoon. Food safety department operations that were hitherto known by various names will now have the name ‘Operation Life'. The minister informed that a total of 3044 inspections have been conducted so far after the unification of the names.

Rectification notices were issued to 439 firms and compounding notices to 426 firms. 1820 surveillance samples and 257 statutory samples were collected. The functioning of 107 institutions with serious lapses was suspended. The minister also stated that the monsoon inspections will continue till July 31.

Inspections are carried out during the rainy season with an emphasis on following hygiene in food establishments. The license of the establishments and the health care of the employees will be checked separately. Instructions have been given to ensure the purity of drinking water. Only ice made from pure water will be allowed in restaurants.

Inspections are also conducted at border check posts, harbours, markets, auction centres and wholesale markets. Fish, meat, milk, condiments, vegetables and shawarma are especially scrutinized. Food safety officers from all circles are participating in the inspections.

Mobile testing lab services are also provided. The last financial year saw a record increase in food safety inspections and fines. Last financial year, 65,432 tests were conducted. A fine of Rs 4.05 crore was levied. 25.77 lakh rupees was collected as a penalty in May alone.
