'If you book train tickets for others, will you be jailed? Facts are

railways

NEW DELHI: The railways have come forward with an explanation regarding the news that has been circulating on social media in the last few days in connection with the booking of train tickets. It has been circulating on social media that if you book tickets for others from your own ID through IRCTC, the railway's ticket booking website, it could result in legal consequences. However, railways are denying such a thing.

Many use their ID to book tickets for friends, relatives and acquaintances. The railways have clarified that will not face any legal action for doing this. The IRCTC also shared detailed information related to ticket booking on their official social media handles.

There is nothing wrong in booking tickets for other people. Tickets can be booked as permissible per month from one ID. Railways has not imposed any restriction on it. Meantime, railways has clarified that tickets booked from your ID should only be used to travel and any trend including overselling is punishable.

There is no restriction on booking and cancellation of tickets, but selling the ticket to someone else and overcharging is an offense under the Indian Railways Act 1989. In the event of a complaint, if found guilty, will have to undergo legal action, railways clarified.
