THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: General Education Minister V Sivankutty said in the Assembly that the state cabinet has decided to allot 138 temporary additional batches to solve the shortage of Plus One seats in the Malabar region. These batches will be allotted to government schools.

A total of 120 temporary batches—61 in Commerce and 59 in Humanities—will be allocated in Malappuram, according to the Minister. Nevertheless, the district will not receive a new science batch. Malappuram will receive 7800 seats in total (65 seats in each batch).

An additional eighteen batches (one for science, four for humanities, and thirteen for business) will be allocated to Kasargod. There will be 1170 seats allocated to the district. The action was taken based on the report submitted by the General Education Director.

The Minister said that the government is expected to incur an additional financial liability of Rs 14.90 crore by allotting 138 temporary batches. Various student organizations had launched protests in the state demanding a solution to the issue of the Plus One seat shortage in the Malabar region.
