Search for missing labourer in Amayizhanjan canal continues; Rescue efforts hampered by debris and floodwaters

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The search for the missing labourer who went to clean Aamayizhanjan canal continues even after four hours. A young man named Joy went missing this morning. The flooded tunnel-like area is littered with garbage and lack of light and air is making rescue operations difficult.

It is informed that a detailed inspection can be done only after removing the garbage by bringing large nets. Those who were with him said that Joy was unable to hold on to the current even though they gave him a rope. Three people came for cleaning work. The rain was heavy and more water flowed. With this, Joy was swept away.

Rescue operations are being carried out by divers and firemen. As the water receded, the scuba diving team was unable to dive and inspect the garbage-filled creek. They tried to get down and move forward, but to no avail. This made the rescue operation complicated.

At the same time, the fire force is trying to clear all the garbage inside the tank. Mayor Arya Rajendran told the media that more staff will be brought in to intensify the waste removal. "Only after removing the waste can we go inside the tunnel and do the inspection. Joy is not a temporary employee of the municipality. The work was not planned to be done today due to the rain and the garbage will be completely removed," said the Mayor.
