KANNUR: With IMD presaging heavy rainfall in Kerala, the Collectors in Kozhikode and Kannur have announced a holiday for educational institutions on Monday. The holiday will also apply to Anganwadis and Professional Colleges. Meanwhile, there will be no change in the previously scheduled public and university examinations.

On Saturday, Kerala woke up to heavy rains which continued incessantly for many hours. But on Sunday, the sky looked clear, giving signs of fine weather. But very soon, IMD on Sunday warned about heavy rains in the state for the coming days. They also warned the predicted rains to be the most extreme in the ongoing monsoon season.

Light rain is also possible at isolated places in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Kasaragod districts. A red alert has been issued in Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Monday. Heavy rain is likely in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Wayanad districts on Monday. Kannur and Kasaragod are on orange alert today.

North-westerly winds are getting stronger along the Kerala coast. As a result of this, there is a possibility of widespread thunder/lightning/windy rains at isolated places in the state for the next five days, the Indian Meteorological Department has informed.
