THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Malayalees all over Kerala offer bali tharpanam to their ancestors on the occasion of Karkidaka Vavu. By offering bali, we renew their loving memories. We offer bali on no moon day (karutha vavu) in the month of Karkidakam as per the Malayalam calendar. This time Karkidaka Vavu Bali falls on August 3rd in most calendars. Bali usually starts before sunrise. However, Ram Sagar Thampuran, a famous astrologer has clarified that this time, bali is not offered on Saturday early morning.
Which is the correct time for bali tharpanam? This is what he says. Other prominent astrologers are also of the same opinion.
It is Chaturdashi on Saturday till 3:50 pm and 33 seconds. So, the time for bali starts in the evening. From this time to 4:42:28 pm on Sunday is the time to offer bali. It is ‘no moon day’. So, bali should be offered this time on Sunday morning. Saturday night is also good to offer bali. Without knowing this, it is not right to offer bali on Saturday morning.
Bali tharpanam ritual
Karkidaka Vavu Bali is when some of our relatives offer food and pooja to our deceased ancestors with devotion. Usually, most people follow this for the peace of their parents. From 48 hours before the bali tharpanam, the mind, body and their actions must be clean. We call this vritham as ‘Orikkal’. Fish, meat, alcohol, stale and cold food should be avoided. Once the tharpanam begins, no food or water should be taken until it is over.
Earlier only men used to offer bali, but now women are also engaged in it. According to rituals, women should not offer bali on menstrual days.
