'Hasina will return soon after formation of caretaker govt', says Sajeeb Wazed

DHAKA: Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy has responded that Hasina will return to the country soon after the formation of the caretaker government in Bangladesh. The interim government in Bangladesh under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took charge on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also wished Yunus.

"Now mother is in India. The moment the interim government announces elections, she will return to Bangladesh. I am confident that the Awami League will have a strong presence in the elections and win." Sajeeb said that he will not hesitate to enter politics if necessary.

Sheikh Hasina fled to India last Monday following nationwide riots. Footage of the rioters ransacking Hasina's bungalow was widely circulated in the international media. It is reported that more than 300 people were killed in the riots. More than a thousand people were injured.

Hasina and her sister are currently in an undisclosed secure facility in New Delhi. It is reported that they will soon seek refuge in Britain. But Britain has not yet responded in this regard.

Yunus, a staunch critic of Hasina, arrived in Dhaka from Paris yesterday. He was received at the airport by senior army officers and student leaders. Yunus responded that he sees all possibilities in Bangladesh to become a beautiful country.

Reservation for family members of freedom fighters in government jobs has turned into massive anti-government protests in Bangladesh. Students took to the streets against reservation in the country where unemployment is rampant. Hasina, who became the prime minister between 1996 and 2001, won successive elections in 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2024.
