KOLKATA: A 31-year-old postgraduate doctor from R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata was brutally raped and murdered last Friday, according to the post-mortem report. The shocking incident has drawn comparisons to the 2012 Delhi Nirbhaya case due to the severity of the assault. Sanjay Roy, a civil volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested earlier in connection with the crime.
According to police sources, the brutal torture took place between 3 am and 5 am on August 9. The post-mortem report states that the woman was strangled to death. The thyroid cartilage was broken due to forceful strangulation. The four-page report also states that due to the accused's perverse sexual addiction and brutal genital torture, the woman had deep injuries on her private parts.
There were injuries on the navel, lips, fingers and left leg. The woman's glasses were broken and her eye was also injured. The accused forcefully hit the woman's head against the wall. The victim's fingernail marks were found on the accused's face as proof that the woman resisted the attack.
It is reported that the accused Sanjay Roy used to visit the hospital campus regularly even though he was not an employee. The doctor's body was found half-naked inside the seminar hall of the college on Friday morning.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said that if the police could not complete the investigation within a week, the case would be handed over to the CBI. Speaking to the relatives of the murdered girl, Mamata clarified that the trial of the case will be transferred to a fast-track court.
