THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Startling revelations from the Hema Committee report have come to light, with multiple actresses testifying about the prevalence of the "casting couch" in the Malayalam film industry. According to the report, several actresses have disclosed that directors and producers often coerce them into compromising situations. Those who refuse to comply are reportedly threatened with being blacklisted from the industry.

The report highlights widespread sexual exploitation, with actresses stating that those who cooperate with such demands are identified by code names. The issue is so pervasive that many feel compelled to compromise in order to secure roles. Disturbingly, prominent actors are among those accused of perpetrating these acts. Actresses have claimed that criminals are effectively controlling the Malayalam cinema industry.

Women who resist these advances are often labelled as troublemakers, facing severe repercussions, including the loss of opportunities and threats to their safety. The report mentions that, in some cases, the pressure has even driven victims to consider suicide. Additionally, those who dare to speak out have had their family members threatened. It was also revealed that, except for lead actresses, many do not have access to basic amenities like caravans. The industry, according to the report, is plagued by a false exterior of glamour.

Details of these practices are documented on pages 55 and 56 of the report, which includes statements from 51 individuals. The testimonies reveal the presence of various intermediaries on film sets, contributing to a culture of rampant misogyny. Actresses reported instances where it is customary for people to knock on their doors inappropriately. The report also criticizes Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs), suggesting they exist in name only. Shockingly, some actresses claimed that not only they but also their parents and relatives have been pressured to comply with demands.
