'No power group can control the film industry; there is no mafia', actor Siddique says that AMMA welcomes police investigation

KOCHI: The Hema Committee report has been well received by AMMA, with General Secretary Siddique stating that all its recommendations should be implemented. He emphasized that the report does not accuse AMMA, expressing disappointment over media reports suggesting otherwise and urged the police to investigate and take action against the wrongdoers.

"AMMA is not running away from responsibility. Our response was delayed due to a busy schedule and the absence of our President but we were not avoiding the issue. The findings and recommendations of the report are very welcome. It is now up to the government to decide on the course of action. We want our members to be safe in their workplaces," Siddique said.

Regarding the notion of a "power group" in the industry, Siddique dismissed the idea, stating, "I don't know of any power group. A High Power Committee comprising two members from all organizations was formed, but I’m not sure if that's what they’re referring to. No power group can control the film industry; there is no mafia. Those who speak of a mafia do not understand what it is. The committee should identify any power group if it exists. We are not afraid of a police investigation. If the report names any culprits, they should be punished, but innocent individuals should not be tarnished by baseless accusations. There is no division within AMMA."

Siddique also addressed a complaint filed in 2018 concerning an incident from 2006, admitting that it was overlooked at the time, a mistake he acknowledged should not have happened. However, he noted that apart from this, AMMA has not received any other complaints about sexual assaults. He mentioned that the bigger issue facing the film industry is non-payment of dues rather than sexual harassment. He also pointed out that most AMMA members were not called to testify before the committee, including himself. However, Mammootty and Mohanlal were called a few times, but only to discuss matters related to remuneration.

Siddique assured that AMMA is committed to addressing any complaints from actresses, stating, "We will go to any extent to resolve these issues."

During the press conference, actress Jomol stated that she had no negative experiences and no one had ever "knocked on her door." Other attendees included Jayan Cherthala, Vinu Mohan and others.
