KOTTAYAM/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Although Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced at 10 am that there would be an inquiry into the startling revelations made by CPM-supported MLA PV Anvar, by 10 pm it turned into a shocking protection.
Despite the allegations being a blow to the government, the Chief Minister did not abandon accused ADGP MR Ajith Kumar, Pathanamthitta SP S Sujit Das, who is on leave, and Political Secretary P Sasi. The Chief Minister announced at the Kottayam Police Association state conference that an investigation would be conducted against the two police officers when Ajith Kumar was present on the stage. There was the possibility of action including suspension and demotion. However, by nightfall, the Chief Minister took the stand of protecting the three. It was decided not to transfer Ajith. The action against Pathanamthitta SP Sujith Das was restricted to a transfer.
Pathanamthitta SP Sujith Das was transferred yesterday but no posting has been given. Sujith has been ordered to appear before the state police chief. Vigilance Special Investigation Unit (1) Superintendent VG Vinod Kumar has been appointed as the new Pathanamthitta SP. ADGP MR Ajith Kumar will not be replaced but there are indications that the decision will be changed if there is pressure.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister's Political Secretary P Sasi, whom Anvar accused of masterminding Ajith Kumar's misguided activities, is also under protective cover. However, the demand for action against P Sasi is strong in CPM and LDF.
After Anvar, former CPM MLA Karat Razack also came forward against P Sasi yesterday, creating a headache for the government. Karat Razack has alleged that after Sasi became the political secretary, even party MLAs do not have access to the chief minister's office and that criminal and smuggling mafias reside there.
