THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is all set to consider the demand to change the two-month electricity bill to a monthly billing system. This was one of the strongest suggestions that emerged during the electricity tariff revision hearings.
It was alleged that the two-month billing system allowed KSEB to make excessive profits by pushing consumers into higher slab rates, even when their monthly usage was minimal. However, KSEB had clarified that these claims were baseless. The decision to introduce monthly billing was accelerated due to the spread of misinformation through social media.
KSEB and Water Authority had previously adopted two-monthly meter readings citing cost and time considerations. Currently, KSEB spends an average of ₹9 per meter reading. This cost will double with monthly billing. Additionally, spot billing will require hiring more staff. It's worth noting that frequent electricity tariff hikes will result in significantly higher bills when paid every two months. Switching to monthly billing would help alleviate this burden, making the payments more manageable for consumers.
Meter reading directly by consumers
To reduce additional expenses when switching to monthly billing, KSEB is considering a plan to enable consumers to carry out meter readings. This would allow consumers to report their meter readings at section offices and pay their bills. To facilitate this, KSEB will set up a customer care number or WhatsApp group.
When the staff visit homes for spot billing next month, they will verify consumers' meter readings to ensure accuracy. Additionally, the board is considering introducing QR code-based payments alongside spot billing. It is estimated that monthly billing will facilitate the elimination of excessive billing and mitigate financial responsibility.
