ANGAMALY: In a shocking incident, a couple was found dead in their house in Puliyanam near Angamaly on Saturday. The deceased have been identified as Thuravoor native Sanal (39) and his wife Sumi (38). Their children Ashwath (11) and Ashtik (6) suffered burns. Sanal's body was discovered hanging, and Sumi died from burn injuries. Ashtik, who suffered serious burn injuries, has been admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Ernakulam. Ashwath, who suffered minor burns on his hand, is at his maternal uncle's house.
Police have recovered a note from Sanal's car, stating he had financial liabilities and didn't receive help from his family.
On Friday night, around 11 pm, neighbour Sijo Jose heard screams from the house and rushed to find smoke and flames billowing out. Upon breaking open the front door, he saw Sanal hanging in the hall. Although Sijo and other neighbours tried to douse the fire using water, they were not able to contain the fire.
In the meantime, Ashwath and Ashtik managed to walk out of the house. Sijo then immediately rushed the children to a hospital in Angamaly. However, Ashtik was soon shifted to a hospital in Ernakulam via an ambulance. The Fire Force arrived at the spot and extinguished the fire.
Sanal also suffered burns. Both Sanal and Sumi had poured kerosene over their bodies. Sanal and his wife had been jointly running an institution called Veda Seva Kendra in Thuravoor.
