KOLLAM: Though his limbs are paralysed since birth, it is not a problem for Muhammed. The 11-year-old forgets all his disabilities when he has three friends with him for everything. GHSS Ayyankoyikkal is the venue for this rare friendship.
S Muhammed is the youngest son of Shahjahan, who was an expatriate, and Sameena. Asif, Mohammed Abin and Bilal are the ones who supports Muhammed from the time he reaches school in the morning till he returns. All are fifth-grade students. Abin and Asif are Mohammed's neighbours.
Due to Covid, Muhammed studied the first and second classes online. He reached Government LPS Ayyankoyikkal in third standard. Muhammed reached fifth grade this year and that's when he reached GHSS Ayyankoyikkal. That's when this friendship started. It is his friends who feed Muhammad, help wash his mouth, take him to the toilet and complete the lesson. Once, Muhammed's mother, Sameena, had asked his friends if they could handfeed food to Muhammed. Since then, the trio has been with Muhammad. All four are good at studies.
On the 10th, during the school youth festival, someone took a video of the trio taking care of Muhammed and posted it on social media. The reel went viral within hours. People including Minister V Sivankutty had shared it.
Electronic wheelchair for transportation
It is Shahjahan who takes his son to school on a scooter and takes him back. In the morning, friends would wait for Mohammed with a wheelchair. Muhammed's transportation in the school is by the electronic wheelchair arranged through the BRC project. Mohammed's class is on the ground floor where he can ride through the ramp. There is also a differently-abled-friendly toilet adjacent to it. At home, Mohammed uses the electronic wheelchair provided by Sujith Vijayan Pillai MLA. Muhammed wants to become a paediatric doctor. His sister is Amina, a nursing student.
