THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The much-awaited PNG (Piped Natural Gas) city gas project is extending. AG&P Pratham had acquired the gas distribution rights in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha districts in June 2021, with the approval of the Central Petroleum Natural Gas Regulatory Board. The company has an eight-year deadline for the completion of the project in Kerala. In Alappuzha, pipe laying works have been completed in five panchayats and Cherthala municipality and gas supply to households has started. Pipe laying works are in progress in Kollam. Only by next year will gas start reaching the homes of domestic consumers in Kollam.

In Thiruvananthapuram city, gas distribution has started in households in 22 wards so far. The piping work in 18 wards is not even a quarter per cent complete. While the authorities say that COVID and continuous rains are delaying the project, the lack of coordination among various departments is also cited as the reason.
