AMARAVATI: The government of Andhra Pradesh under Nara Chandrababu Naidu dissolved the state waqf board on Sunday. The Waqf board was nominated by the previous YSR Congress government.
The move comes after the uproar over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. After considering all related aspects and the High Court order, the government has clarified that it has decided to dissolve the Waqf Board.
The state government pointed out that the AP State Waqf Board constituted by the YSR government has been defunct for a long time (since March 2023). The Waqf Board constituted then had 11 members. Eight were nominated while three of them were elected to the board.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court held the election of the Chairperson of the State Waqf Board on November 1, 2023. The court's action was in the context of a petition related to the appointment of the Chairperson.
Meanwhile, Minority Welfare Minister NMD Farooq said that the coalition government led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is committed to the protection and maintenance of Waqf properties and the welfare of minorities.
